5 things you should avoid doing when renting a tuxedo.
11. Bumping
up the inches on your height. Yes it’s
a known fact in the men’s formal wear business, and on State Issued driver’s
licenses nationwide, that short men have a tendency to tack on a few extra inches,
when it comes to saying how tall they are. As a result, the default height that
men short men tend to reach for is claiming to be of 5ft 9” even when they know
that they are 5ft 4” with shoes on.
Though there is
nothing wrong with wanting to be taller, here’s the scoop on why you shouldn't
make the false claim when renting a suit.
·
If you are being professionally measured for
your tux, and the clerk is 5ft 9” and you are chin level with him or her, then
obviously saying that your 5ft 9 isn't going to be believable, even when you
manage to say it with a blank look on your face and have an I dare you to
question my height look in your eyes.
·
An exaggerated height is going to affect the length
of your pants/trousers, which in turn will affect the fit and ultimately the
look of the pants that you renting.
· It’s going to take a lot of extra time and yes stress to get the pants taken up, and most formal wear rental companies don’t want their pants cut for alterations, especially if you left it until the last moment to pick up your tuxedo and discovered how long the pants where once you got home because you insisted that you didn't need to do an in store try on, before leaving the store.

·
There is nothing worse, and more uncomfortable
than having a cascade of surplus fabric bunched up around your ankles or overlapping
your shoes and getting caught under the heels of your shoes.
·
The Bride won’t thank you for the photo captured
memories of your pants looking clearly ill-fitting and sloppy in her wedding
pictures, when her dream has always been to have a classy looking wedding.
2. Don’t Insist that you be measured under your
belly. Even if you wear your pants/jeans under your belly, try not to have
your measurements taken that way. Tuxedo pants do not fit in quite the same way
that your jeans, shorts or comfort pants do.
·
Allow the clerk to measure you the correct way,
even if you believe that your waist is an inch above your hips.
·
Accept the fact that though you might be wearing
38 inched waist under your belly and still have the inside tag to prove it, correctly
and professionally measured your waist measurements is based on numerical fact,
even if the fact is that you are a 44 inched waist instead of your tagged
proved 38 inched waist.
·
Don’t be alarmed, embarrassed or upset when the
clerk tells you what your real measurements are a lot bigger verses the
measurements that you had in your mind, the Clerk is not providing you with the
information to upset you. All they care about is having you look and feel good
in their rentals, so that you can be a referring customer and better yet a
returning customer.
·
Remember that the formal-wear that you are going
to be wearing is only for one day, so instead of leaving the store with guns
blaring because the tape measure won, go with the flow so that you can be
comfortable and look good in your tux on the day.
3. Don’t
rent and carry. Remember to try
your rental items on in the store, don’t be in a rush to rent and carry. Trying
on rental items before you leave the store ensures that any alterations or
reorders can be taken care of immediately.
5. Check
your accessories. Don’t forget to check that you have all of the necessary
accessories that need to go with your tuxedo, Zoot suit or suit rental.
· Button covers / Studs, cummerbunds, tie, pocket
square, Vest, and matching socks, Gloves, Hat, cuff-links, tie pin, plus any
additional jewelry.
· Request suspenders instead of a belt for a
better fit, if you have pooch belly, especially if you are used to wearing your pants or
jeans below your belly. Suspenders will help to keep your pants where they are supposed
to be.
· Check that you have the correct size and style
of shoe and that they are a comfortable fit.
